Seasonal Job Openings
We are hiring for navigation season.
Canal Structure Operator
Assist Chief Lock Operators in operating and maintaining
Canal structures.
Interact with recreational and commercial boaters.
Responsible for recording specific operational data plus directing
all boaters appropriately for safe passage through locks.
Possess and continuously maintain a valid driver license
appropriate to the types of vehicles being operated.
Hourly rate: $20.97
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Six months experience in the operation and assembly
or operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical,
automotive, hydraulic or diesel machinery
OR
• Six months experience working on a canal(s), of which 50
percent of your duties must have included working at a canal
lock and/or lift bridge
OR
• Certificate of completion from a BOCES or a post-high school
program in electrical maintenance; electrical construction; or
mechanical, hydraulic, automotive, or diesel repair or technology
OR
• Six college semester credit hours in electrical construction;
electrical maintenance; or in hydraulic, mechanical, automotive,
or diesel repair or technology
Canal Worker 1
May be assigned to assist with Lock operation/maintenance,
the operation/maintenance of Floating Plant vessels and
assisting with other routine maintenance tasks associated
with the Canal system.
USCG or OTETA Drug Testing Required.
Hourly rate: $18.70
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be at least 18
• Physically capable of performing duties assigned
• Possess and continuously maintain a valid driver license
appropriate to the types of vehicles being operated
• No specific education or experience required
Facility Operations Assistant 1
Work independently or on a crew to assist in maintaining canal
equipment, structures, grounds and facilities at historic canal
and maintenance sites.
May be responsible for running heavy equipment including
commercial riding mowers.
Hourly rate: $18.70
QUALIFICATIONS

• Physically capable of performing duties assigned

Student Assistant/Intern - 2 positions
We are in the process of creating a vegetation management plan for the Canal System lands. Interns could be involved in the following related activities and initiatives:
- Assist in the development of a Vegetation Management Plan.
- Develop an iNaturalist project and Bio Blitz plan for crowd-sourced information-gathering.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of pollinator and habitat corridors along the Canal System.
- Perform a literature review for research topics related to vegetation on embankments and opportunities for increased biodiversity.
- Other projects related to ecology, land management and the selected student’s interests or experiential learning objectives.
Hourly range: $16.00-$23.00. Rate will vary based on education level.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be currently enrolled as part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate college students at an accredited education institution.
Possess and maintain a valid NYS driver license

Business Development Specialist 1 (Events and Tourism Manager)
DUTIES:
The New York State Canal Corporation is seeking an experienced and dynamic Events and Tourism Manager to join our team. Reporting to the Director for Public Engagement, the Events and Tourism Manager will be responsible for planning, organizing, and executing a variety of events and tourism initiatives that promote the New York State Canal System. This role requires a strategic thinker with a passion for event management and tourism development, as well as a deep understanding of the regional cultural and economic landscape. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop and implement strategic plans for events and tourism initiatives that align with the Canal Corporation's goals and objectives.
- Coordinate and manage all aspects of event planning, including logistics, budgeting, marketing, and execution.
- Collaborate with local businesses, community organizations, and government agencies to promote the Canal System as a premier tourism destination.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of events and tourism programs, making recommendations for improvements and future initiatives.
- Oversee the creation of promotional materials and campaigns to attract tourists and participants to events.
- Manage relationships with vendors, contractors, and sponsors to ensure successful event delivery.
- Handle administrative tasks related to event and tourism management, including permits, contracts, and reporting.
- Hire and manage seasonal staff that will help facilitate the Canal Corporation’s presence at events such as The Great New York State Fair, regional boat shows, and Canalside community festivals, many of which occur on weekends.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and safety standards for events.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Event Management, Tourism, Marketing, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in event planning, tourism management, or a related area.
- Proven track record of successful event management and tourism promotion.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the region.
