ALBANY--The New York State Canal Corporation will hold a public information meeting in Hudson Falls to discuss a proposed construction project for the Champlain Canalway Trail in the town of Kingsbury.

The meeting will be held at Hudson Falls Village Hall, 220 Main St. on March 22, from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

The Canal Corporation is progressing design studies for the construction of a shared-use path from the Glens Falls Feeder Canal Trail adjacent to the Five Combined to New Swamp Road in the Town of Kingsbury. The proposed project is 3.5 miles long. One mile is located on the existing trail and 2.5 miles on Towpath Road.

This project is a segment of the Champlain Canalway Trail project from Fort Edward to Fort Ann previously developed in 2005. Funding is being provided under Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's Empire State Trail program. When completed in 2020, the Empire State Trail, which will also include the Erie Canalway Trail, will offer an unparalleled 750-mile network of multi-use trails, the largest system of its kind in the U.S.

Rehabilitation of the existing trail by regrading and placing a new stone dust surface path is proposed, along with additional new construction of bridges over the Old Champlain Canal and Bond Creek. Additionally, a new culvert installation under State Route 196 with allow bicyclists and pedestrians to cross from Rabideau Lane to Towpath Road. The proposed project includes new signage and amenities for pedestrians such as picnic tables and benches.

Canal Corporation representatives will be available to answer questions at the meeting, and will have graphic displays of the trail project available. The purpose of the meeting is to obtain comments on the proposed project from individuals, groups, officials and local agencies. The Canal Corporation is specifically soliciting comments on the project's social, economic and environmental effects trail project available.

Further information or comments about the project may be obtained from the Canalway Trail Program Engineer, Richard P. Karis, Jr., P.E., at Richard.Karis@canals.ny.gov
