Debris expected; Mohawk River sections of Erie Canal next 24-36 hours.
Notice to Mariners
Erie Canal/Mohawk River
July 8, 2017
Mariners are advised of debris floating on the Mohawk River sections of the Erie Canal east of Herkimer for the next 24-36 hours. While crews removing debris from Mohawk dams intend to completely remove all debris from the waterway, some does breaks free when dislodged and cannot be safely or practically captured.
Mariners are advised to use bow and stern thrusters sparingly when in lock chambers.
It is further recommended to stay off plane and proceed at trawling speed in the higher speed riverine sections of the Erie Canal, as floating debris often has a minimal visual profile above the water surface.
Features along the eastern portion of the Erie Canal are listed by mileage at /Navigation-Information.
