Notice to Mariners

Erie Canal – Fairport-Pittsford

June 1, 2017

 

Mariners are advised that the temporary weekday ban on rafting on the Erie Canal in and between the Villages of Fairport and Pittsford in order to maximize the width of the channel for large commercial cargo shipments has been extended through the weekend.  Rafting is the practice of mooring to a vessel that is moored to a dock or terminal wall.

All mariners in the area need to proceed with extreme caution as these unusually large vessels transiting have less maneuverability than the smaller vessels typically using this navigation pool. All mariners are to stay as far from these vessels as practical, as they can create turbulence in the channel not regularly encountered in this section of canal.

Mariners encountering these shipments are likely to experience delays.  Plan itineraries accordingly.
