Notice to Mariners

Champlain Canal: Locks C-1 through C-4 On-Demand Lockings Resume

July 2, 2026

The New York State Canal Corporation today announced the following update:

Beginning Friday, July 3, 2026, Champlain Canal Lock C‑1 in Waterford through Lock C‑4 in Stillwater will return to on‑demand lockings, aligning with the rest of the New York State Canal system. Since 2024, these locks operated on a limited schedule as part of the Rapid Response Plan, which was established to slow the spread of round goby, an aquatic invasive species (AIS).

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Canal Corporation have updated their Rapid Response Plan based on new monitoring data. With these revisions, scheduled lockings are suspended, provided round goby is not detected above Lock C-4, though double draining procedures will continue at Locks C-1 through C-4 to help deter round goby movement.

Mariners can help slow the spread of round goby and other AIS through good practices like “Clean, Drain, Dry” and “Carry-In, Carry-Out.”

DEC and the Canal Corporation will continue close monitoring and adjust operations as needed to protect the Lake Champlain Basin.
