Reopening Update: Erie Canal - St. Johnsville to New London
Notice to Mariners
Erie Canal – St. Johnsville to New London
June 25, 2025
Mariners are advised that the Erie Canal between Lock E-16 in St. Johnsville and Lock E-22 in New London has reopened for navigation.
Boaters should be aware of floating debris and should proceed at a "No Wake" speed as some debris may be hard to see.
Mariners should also be aware that shoaling exists between Lock E-16 and Oneida Lake, particularly in areas where tributaries feed the canal. When approaching a creek mouth, go to idle speed, favor the opposite side of the channel, while still staying within, and honor uncharted red & green Aids to Navigation, which in some reaches have been placed to mark shoaling. Not all creek mouths have been re-sounded since the last high-water event, so as always, caution is advised.
Vessels arriving at Lock E-16 or Lock E-17 at the scheduled even hour will be locked through, even if it takes multiple lockings. Note, all other locks are on-demand.
Vessels with an air draft exceeding 20’ intending to transit through Lock E-19 should contact the Eastern Region Water Management Engineer at 518-703-2838 to ensure the lower pool is at a sufficient elevation to clear under Bridge E-40 (skewed railroad bridge on lower side of Lock E-19).
