Notice to Mariners 

Update – Erie Canal Lock E-16 to Lock E-17

June 13, 2025 

 

The New York State Canal Corporation today announced the following:

 

Update and Clarification on Locking Hours:

 

As previously announced, Lock E-16 in St. Johnsville and Lock E-17 in Little Falls will open for navigation today, Friday, June 13, 2025, at 8:00 a.m.

 

Until further notice, Lock E-16 and Lock E-17 will pass vessels in both directions on the even hours at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. During the last locking of the day at 6:00 p.m., Lock E-16 will only pass eastbound vessels while Lock E-17 will only pass westbound vessels. The 6:00 p.m. locking will clear the pool between Locks E-16 and E-17 as no vessels will be allowed to moor in this location overnight.

Reminder:

All vessels transiting between Lock E-16 and Rocky Rift (navigation aids G441/R456), must travel at idle speed (no more than 5 MPH), no exception, as the Canal Corporation continues to monitor the integrity of the earthen embankment west of Lock E-16.

Future closures of the canal in this area may be announced at a moment’s notice depending on continued evaluation of the embankment and local weather.

 

The Canal Corporation appreciates the patience of mariners, marina operators, and local stakeholders as we have worked to complete critical repairs to infrastructure in the Mohawk Valley.

 

Mariners are advised to check the Canal Corporation’s Notice to Mariners for the latest information and to plan their itineraries accordingly as sections of the Canal system open to ensure dock space and amenities are available.
