Notice to Mariners

Opening: Erie Canal Lock E-16 to Lock E-17

June 12, 2025

The New York State Canal Corporation today announced the following update:

Lock E-16 in St. Johnsville and Lock E-17 in Little Falls will open for navigation on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 8:00 a.m.

Until further notice, Lock E-16 will pass vessels on the even hours at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m.

All vessels transiting between Lock E-16 and Rocky Rift (navigation aids G441/R456), must travel at idle speed (no more than 5 MPH), no exception, as the Canal Corporation continues to monitor the integrity of the earthen embankment west of Lock E-16.

No vessels will be allowed overnight between Locks E-16 and E-17.

Future closures of the canal in this area may be announced at a moment’s notice depending on continued evaluation of the embankment and local weather.

The Canal Corporation appreciates the patience of mariners, marina operators, and local stakeholders as we have worked to complete critical repairs to infrastructure in the Mohawk Valley.

Additional Information for Mariners

Boaters transiting between Lock E-8 in Rotterdam and Lock E-16 in St. Johnsville may experience low water as the Canal Corporation removes debris from the movable dams and resets water control structures after the recent high flow event.

Erie Canal Lock E-24 in Baldwinsville, Erie Canal Lock E-25 in Mays Point, Cayuga – Seneca Canal Lock CS-1 in Cayuga, and the entire Oswego Canal remain closed to navigation due to high water and unsafe conditions. An announcement regarding the reopening of these areas of the Canal system will be made in a subsequent Notice to Mariners.

Boaters who are navigating the open sections of the Canal system should be aware of floating debris generated by recent heavy rainfall and proceed with caution, at a "No Wake" speed as some debris may be hard to see.

Mariners are advised to check the Canal Corporation’s Notice to Mariners for the latest information and to plan their itineraries accordingly as sections of the Canal system open to ensure dock space and amenities are available.
