Notice to Mariners

Eastern Erie and Champlain Canals

September 11, 2026

 

Mariners are advised of delays due to closures at locks during underwater inspections occurring on the Erie and Champlain Canals on the following schedule:

Monday, September 14 – Erie Canal Lock E-15 in Fort Plain – Southwest Guide Wall.

Wednesday, September 9 – Erie Canal Lock E-14 in Canajoharie – Northeast and Northwest Guide Walls and Canajoharie Terminal Wall south of Lock E-14.

Thursday, September 10 – Erie Canal Lock E-10 in Cranesville – Southwest Guide Wall, Erie Canal Lock E-9 in Rotterdam – Northeast Approach Wall and Amsterdam Terminal Wall just east of NY Route 30 Bridge (E-19A).

Friday, September 18 – Champlain Canal Lock C-12 in Whitehall – Lock Chamber and surrounding areas.

 

The inspection areas will be marked by commercial diver’s flags while divers are in the water. Boaters must come to a full stop, use caution, and proceed at a "No Wake" speed, and under no circumstances exceed 5 mph. Boaters must avoid inspection areas. Boaters should contact the lock operator to schedule times to pass through the lock.
