Notice to Mariners

Champlain Canal – Waterford and Halfmoon

May 16, 2023

The Canal Corporation today announced that Locks C-1 in Waterford and C-2 in Halfmoon will have scheduled operations for all recreational traffic throughout the navigation season.  Lock C-1 will pass northbound traffic daily on the odd hours (7am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm).  Lock C-2 northbound traffic will be locked through when all vessels from Lock C-1 arrive at Lock C-2.

Lock C-2 will pass southbound traffic daily on the even hours (8am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm).  Lock C-1 southbound traffic will be locked through when all vessels from Lock C-2 arrive at Lock C-1.

Additionally, these locks will operate on a "double draining" procedure.  Each lock will be maintained in a full condition and emptied twice during locking operations.  For northbound traffic, the locks will be drained twice before traffic enters the lock chamber.  For southbound traffic, the lock will be emptied and refilled once before the vessels are admitted into the lock for southbound passage.  The second draining will occur with the vessels in the lock.

These measures are being implemented as risk reduction strategies to mitigate the spread of the round goby, an aquatic invasive species, in the Champlain Canal.  Mariners may learn how they can help mitigate the spread of aquatic invasive species here.
