Notice to Mariners

Erie Canal – Tonawandas/Pendleton

July 22, 2022

Mariners are advised that the placement of herbicide is scheduled to begin on Monday, beginning of business, July 25th, between Ellicott Creek and Tonawanda Creek Bridge (E-240). The work should be completed by Friday, July 29th. Any swimming in the canal is absolutely prohibited in the treatment area until one day after the application of the herbicide.

During this treatment, lockages at Lock 34/35 (Lockport) will be on the following schedule:

8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 7:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m.

Mariners should reduce speed, stop all forward motion and proceed at a "No-Wake" speed when transiting this area.

Due to active water management intended to minimize the current in Tonawanda Creek during treatment, the water level between Lock E-34 (Lockport) and the Genesee River in Rochester could be reduced.

Visit StopHydrillaWNY.org for more information including details about the herbicide, project-specific updates, and ways to get involved in the management of hydrilla.
