Notice to Mariners

Canal Closures in Central New York

July 1, 2015

Mariners are advised that the following sections of the Canal System have closed to all vessel traffic, effective immediately, due to high water levels and excessive currents caused by heavy rainfall overnight:

  • Oswego Canal
  • Erie Canal from Lock E-23 (Brewerton) to Lock E-27 (Lyons)
  • Cayuga-Seneca Canal from Lock CS-1 to Erie Canal Junction (remains closed)

Eastbound traffic already enroute to Lock E-23 will be allowed to lock up eastbound to the Oneida Lake level until 6 pm today.

Barring additional rainfall, this section of the Canal System is expected to remain closed for several days to allow water levels to recede and to reposition navigational aids.

Marinas and Public Docks can be found at http://www.canals.ny.gov/wwwapps/boating/marinas.aspx and on the Canal Map at http://www.canals.ny.gov/maps/index.html?layer=marinas.
