Notice to Mariners

Erie Canal – Rotterdam to Yosts

Canal System Update

August 28, 2021

Mariners are advised that Erie Canal Locks E-8 (Rotterdam) to Lock E-13 (Yosts) that were closed in a previous Notice to Mariners have reopened to navigation. The eastern portion of the Canal system is now open from Erie Canal Lock E-2 (Waterford) to Lock E-20 (Whitesboro). The western portion of the Canal system is now open from Erie Canal Lock E-26 (Clyde) to Lock E-34/35 (Lockport).

Boaters should be aware of floating debris generated by recent heavy rainfall and proceed with caution, at a "No Wake" speed as some debris may be hard to see. Some buoys (Aids to Navigation) may be off station and are being relocated by Canal forces.

Sections of the Canal system that remain closed will reopen as conditions permit. These areas of the Canal system include:

ERIE CANAL

Lock E-21 (New London) – Lock E-25 (May’s Point)

Reopening in phases starting on Friday, September 3 as water levels recede within Oneida Lake and the Oswego and Seneca River basins, including Cross Lake

OSWEGO CANAL

Lock O-1 (Phoenix) to Lock O-8 (Oswego)

Anticipated reopening on Friday, September 3 as water levels recede within Oneida Lake and the Oswego and Seneca River basins

CAYUGA/SENECA CANAL

Lock CS-1 (Cayuga) – Lock CS-4 (Waterloo)

Reopening in phases starting on Friday, September 3 as water levels recede within Cayuga and Seneca Lakes
