Notice to Mariners

Erie Canal – Ilion

September 21, 2020

Mariners are advised of a scaffolding shift for bridge painting activities that will take place on Tuesday, September 22nd on the Route 51 Bridge (E-37A) over the Erie Canal in Ilion. Normal overhead clearance will be reduced by one foot on the north half of the navigation channel due to lighted scaffolding beneath the bridge. Boaters should use the south side of the channel when passing under the bridge. Construction signs are posted on both sides of the bridge.

Mariners should reduce speed, stop all forward motion, blow horns, and proceed at a "No-Wake" speed when traversing this area.

The Canal system is scheduled to close to navigation at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. All recreational and commercial vessel operators should plan their trips to ensure they exit the system by that time. For more information, click here.
