Notice to Mariners

Erie Canal – Tonawandas/Pendleton

August 9, 2019

Mariners are advised that a second placement of herbicide is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 12th at noon between Ellicott Creek and Tonawanda Creek Bridge (E-240). The work should be completed by Thursday, August 15th. Any swimming in the canal is absolutely prohibited in the treatment area until one day after the application of the herbicide.

During this treatment, lockages at Lock 34/35 Lockport will be on the following schedule:

8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:00 a.m. (August 13 to August 15), 11:45 a.m. (August 13 to August 15), 12:30 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 7:00 PM, 9:00 p.m.

Mariners should reduce speed, stop all forward motion and proceed at a "No-Wake" speed when transiting this area.

Due to active water management intended to minimize the current in Tonawanda Creek during treatment, the water level between Lock E-34 Lockport and the Genesee River in Rochester could be reduced. This drop could be as much as two (2) feet in Lockport and would taper down eastward to nearly zero in Rochester.

Visit StopHydrillaWNY.org for more information including details about the herbicide, project-specific updates, and ways to get involved in the management of hydrilla.
