This message type is best if you will be retrieving your emails on a personal computer OR on a smartphone with an appropriate email client (Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, iCloud, Outlook, Hotmail, etc.). This is the recommended way to receive alerts as it is the easiest way to manage your account. DO NOT send this format to your mobile device as a text message.

Short message: Select this format to receive alerts as short messages, typically limited to 160 characters or less. This format should be used for receiving alerts as text messages on a mobile device.

Alerts Only: Provides information on emergency situations and severe weather-related warnings that may cause prolonged canal closures or navigation restrictions.

NOTICE: Effective November 1, 2009, New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1225-d prohibits the operator of a motor vehicle from using any portable electronic device while such vehicle is in motion. In this regard, portable electronic device includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, personal digital assistants, handheld devices with mobile data access, laptop computers, pagers, broadband personal communication devices and other portable computing devices. This option may be useful if you are going on vacation and do not want to receive emails during that time. 

After you submit your information and activate your subscription, you will be able to use the "Hold" feature by simply updating your profile information and checking the "Hold" option.
