Canal Update

Mariners are advised that the Champlain Canal has reopened from Whitehall to Fort Edward, including Locks C-12 through Lock C-8 and the Eastern Erie Canal has reopened from Rome to Sylvan Beach including Locks E-21 through E-22.

Other sections of the Canal System remain closed due to unsafe conditions related to recent high water and excessive current caused by heavy rainfall.  These include:

  • Champlain Canal from Fort Edward to Waterford, including Locks C-7 through C-1.

  • Erie Canal from Waterford to Whitesboro, including Locks E-2 through E-20.

  • Oswego Canal from Three Rivers to Oswego, including Locks O-1 through O-8, except that Lock O-8 is open for southbound traffic.

The remaining closed sections will be reopened when conditions allow and the safety of canal patrons can be ensured.

A revised tentative schedule for the re-opening of these closed sections follows:

  • Erie Canal from Waterford to Amsterdam, including Locks E-2 through E-11 - later today at the earliest or Wednesday, July 5.

  • Erie Canal from Amsterdam to Herkimer, including Locks E-12 through E-18 - Wednesday, July 5 at the earliest or later this week.

  • Erie Canal from Herkimer to Oneida Lake, including Locks E-19 through E-20 - later today at the earliest or later this week.

  • Champlain Canal from Fort Edward to Waterford, including Locks C-7 through C-1 - later today at the earliest or Wednesday, July 5.

  • Oswego Canal - later today at the earliest or Wednesday, July 5.

Additionally, the suspension of the 48 hour per month limit on mooring at terminal walls remains in effect for the Champlain Canal and Eastern Erie Canal - including Sylvan Beach.
