Notice to Mariners
Erie Canal – Mohawk River
October 27, 2017
The New York State Canal Corporation announced in a Thursday, October 26th Notice to Mariners that water levels on the Mohawk River portion of the Erie Canal between Locks E-8 near Scotia and E-19 near Frankfort will be lowered several feet, starting today (Friday, October 27th) as preemptive measures are implemented in advance of flooding forecast for the area and that if necessary, water levels may be reduced further to natural “run of river” conditions if forecasts continue to worsen this weekend. Subsequent forecasts have indeed warranted this action, and so as of 9:00 AM tomorrow (Saturday, October 28th) the river levels will start to be reduced to “run of river” levels.
Additional updates will follow if needed.
Residents are encouraged to take any appropriate actions regarding any vessels, docks, or other seasonal structures in these areas which may be impacted or damaged by significantly reduced water levels.
