Notices to Mariners provide the latest information about Canal openings/closures, water levels, construction and other elements affecting navigation on the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca Canals.

Notice to Mariners can be sent to any device capable of receiving email or text messages, including personal computers and mobile devices (cell phones, tablets, PDAs and text pagers).

Note: Email messages from this service may exceed 160 characters. Before using this service with your cell phone or other mobile device please read and understand how this service will format and send messages. This link opens a new window

Provides information on canal closures and delays, weather-related warnings, navigation restrictions and advisories which will impact travel as well as water level fluctuations, marine events, scheduled maintenance, and other information which may be useful to travelers.

NOTICE: Effective November 1, 2009, New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1225-d prohibits the operator of a motor vehicle from using any portable electronic device while such vehicle is in motion. In this regard, portable electronic device includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, personal digital assistants, handheld devices with mobile data access, laptop computers, pagers, broadband personal communication devices and other portable computing devices. This prohibition applies to viewing, taking or transmitting images, and to composing, sending, reading, viewing, accessing, browsing, transmitting, saving or retrieving email, text messages or other electronic data.

Hold Feature: The Canal Corporation offers a "Hold" feature that will allow you to place your subscription on hold.  Notice to Mariner emails will not be sent to your email address while in hold status. This option may be useful if you are going on vacation and do not want to receive emails during that time. 

After you submit your information and activate your subscription, you will be able to use the "Hold" feature by simply updating your profile information and checking the "Hold" option.

The New York State Canal Corporation (Canal Corporation) provides these Notice to Mariners as a public service planning tool. The Canal Corporation endeavors to publish the most accurate, up-to-date information available. However, because canal conditions change rapidly, the Canal Corporation cannot and does not guarantee the accuracy of this information. There are often delays between the time an incident occurs and the time it is reported to the Canal Corporation and posted to the Canal Notices and Alerts information system. Also, incidents may exist that have not yet been reported to the Canal Corporation. Therefore, these Notice to Mariners are intended for general information purposes and the Canal Corporation advises all receivers of these alerts that they should not be relied upon without independent verification.
