Notice to Mariners

CANAL RE-OPENING SCHEDULE

 November 16, 2011

Mariners are advised that the Erie Canal between Lock E-8 in Rotterdam and E-17 in Little Falls will re-open to commercial and recreational navigation at 7 AM on Sunday, November 20th.  The Oswego Canal, and the eastern Erie Canal from Waterford to Three Rivers, will remain open until 5 PM on Saturday, December 3rd.  The Troy Federal Lock will also remain open until at least 5 PM on Saturday, December 3rd.

The Champlain Canal, the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, and the western Erie Canal between Three Rivers and Tonawanda closed for the season on November 15th, and remain closed.

Mariners are advised to proceed with caution in areas of the Erie Canal which were closed for repairs due to flooding associated with Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee earlier this season.  Mariners should be alert for floating and submerged debris.  In some areas, submerged debris is identified by small silver/yellow markers.  The controlling depth on the Erie Canal for the remainder of the 2011 navigation season will be 8.5’.  For more information on available depth in certain areas, visit http://www.canals.ny.gov/navinfo/.

In some areas, buoys are placed indicating a reduced width navigation channel.  Additionally, many of the buoys are not numbered and do not coincide with those shown on the NOAA charts.  Maintenance vessels, dredges, and other craft engaged in clean-up operations will be encountered.  Due to ongoing recovery operations, minor and infrequent delays may be experienced at certain lock locations.

Mariners are asked to report any aids-to-navigation found to be off station, hazards, shoals, or other obstructions to the New York State Canal Corporation at (518) 471-5016.

Services will be limited or unavailable at many marinas and public docking facilities along this route.  A chart below indicates facilities scheduled to remain open to serve vessels transiting the Canal System during this period:
