Notice to Mariners

Partial Canal System Closing

November 14, 2011

Mariners are advised that the Champlain Canal, the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, and the western Erie Canal between Three Rivers and Tonawanda will close for the season as scheduled tomorrow, November 15th, at 5 PM for all commercial and recreational navigation.  The Oswego Canal, and the eastern Erie Canal from Lock E-2 in Waterford to E-8 in Rotterdam and from Lock E-17 in Little Falls to Three Rivers, will remain open.

Preparations to re-open the Erie Canal for a special, two-week season between Lock E-8 in Rotterdam and Lock E-17 in Little Falls are ongoing.  Once this section re-opens, the eastern Erie Canal between Three Rivers and Waterford, and the Oswego Canal, will remain open for a two-week period to allow commercial and recreational navigation between Lake Ontario and the Hudson River.  The Troy Federal Lock will be open during this period as well.

A schedule for re-opening closed sections of the Canal will be published this week in a subsequent Notice to Mariners.  This Notice will include a list of facilities remaining open to provide boater services, as well as any pertinent restrictions or advisories.
