Notice to Mariners
Canal System Update
May 25, 2011
Mariners are advised that hazardous conditions continue to exist along many areas of the NYS Canal System. While water levels along many portions of the NYS Canal System have begun to recede, mariners navigating open sections may still encounter excessive currents, high water levels, reduced bridge clearances, and aids to navigation which are off station.
The following sections of the Canal System are open:
Erie Canal
Lock E-2 (Waterford) to E-23 (Brewerton)
Lock E-26 (Clyde) to East Guard Lock (Rochester)
West Guard Lock (Rochester) to Tonawanda
Erie Canal lift bridges
Cayuga/Seneca Canal
Lock C/S-2&3 (Seneca Falls) to Lock C/S-4 (Waterloo)
Champlain Canal
Lock C-1 (Waterford) to Lock C-12 (Whitehall)
The following sections of the Canal System remain closed:
Erie Canal
Lock E-23 (Brewerton) to Lock E-26 (Clyde)
Genesee River connection to Corn Hill Landing
Oswego Canal
The entire Oswego Canal remains closed
Cayuga/Seneca Canal
Lock C/S-1 (Cayuga)
Champlain Canal
Lock C-12 (Whitehall) open to limited commercial traffic only on a case-by-case basis
